Former governor of Rivers State and ex-minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he was chased out of the PDP by Goodluck Jonathan and his wife.

Amaechi said this on Friday during an appearance on ‘Sunrise Daily’, a Channels Television breakfast programme.

The former minister, added that he would back Atiku Abubakar if the former vice president was chosen to represent the party in the 2027 presidential election.

Recall that Amaechi left the PDP in 2013 following his suspension for alleged anti-party activities.

Prior to the 2015 general election, he was a prominent member of the new PDP (nPDP) party that disintegrated into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I was literally chased out of the PDP… the president, Goodluck and his wife, took over the political structure in Rivers state and forced me out. The same thing happened in APC,” he said.

“I will never keep quiet in the face of injustice. When I speak up, they begin to plan to make me irrelevant.”

‘PRIMARY ELECTION OVER CONSENSUS’

The former minister further said that candidates must be given the opportunity to gauge their popularity at the polls, rejecting suggestions for a consensual agreement inside the ADC prior to the 2027 election.

He said, “Of course, if Atiku wins, I will support him. But beyond him winning, it has to be through primaries”

“I don’t agree with those who say they want a consensus candidate. Let’s allow people to vote for who they want in the party.”

According to Amaechi, Abubakar is eligible to run for president since it is within his constitutional rights.

“Vice-President Atiku is eminently qualified to be the president of Nigeria, and it is within his right to contest,” he said.

Amaechi claimed that while in office, he has shown this ability, especially when it comes to addressing insecurity in Rivers State.

Additionally, he criticised the existing leadership, claiming that ethnic, religious, and economic interests should all be balanced in governance.

He cautioned that failing to guarantee inclusivity could exacerbate popular discontent and spark unrest throughout the nation.

I can solve Nigeria’s problems

Meanwhile, the former minister also said his experience in governance and infrastructure development positions him to address Nigeria’s challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I don’t care who else is running. I’m running because I’m a Nigerian candidate. Because I know the Nigerian problem. And I can solve the Nigerian problem,” he said.
