Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over the growing incidents of mob violence in Nigeria, warning that it poses a major threat to the right to life in the country.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Sunday, the organisation criticised what it described as the persistent failure of authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible for such killings.
Amnesty International said the recurring nature of mob attacks, coupled with low levels of accountability, reflects serious weaknesses in Nigeria’s justice system.
It described mob violence as “one of the biggest threats to the right to life in Nigeria,” adding that many of the cases over the years have not led to meaningful investigations or convictions.
The organisation further noted that this lack of accountability has contributed to a cycle of impunity and ongoing violence.
It also highlighted regional differences in the nature of mob attacks, stating that in southern Nigeria, victims are often accused of offences such as theft, ritual practices, or witchcraft.
In the northern part of the country, it said mob violence is more frequently linked to accusations of blasphemy, sometimes influenced by religious sentiments or figures.
Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen protections for citizens, ensure thorough investigations, and prosecute those involved in such killings in order to curb the growing trend.
BACKSTORY…
The statement by Amnesty International comes amid growing concern over repeated incidents of mob violence across Nigeria, where individuals accused of crimes or social misconduct are sometimes attacked by crowds before proper investigations can be carried out.
Over the years, such incidents have been reported in different parts of the country, often triggered by allegations such as theft, ritual suspicion, witchcraft, or blasphemy. In many cases, these situations escalate quickly, leading to severe injuries or deaths before security agencies can intervene.
Amnesty International has consistently raised alarm over this trend, arguing that the lack of accountability and slow prosecution of offenders has encouraged a cycle of impunity. The organisation says that when perpetrators of mob killings are not arrested or punished, it creates an environment where similar attacks continue to happen.
It is against this backdrop that Amnesty issued its latest warning, describing mob violence as a serious threat to the right to life in Nigeria. The organisation urged authorities to strengthen law enforcement response, ensure thorough investigations, and prosecute those involved in such attacks to deter future occurrences and restore public confidence in the justice system.
