The Anambra State Government has emphasized that electricity is an essential service and stressed the need for strict regulations to ensure the effective development of the power sector in the state.
Speaking on Tuesday during the official signing of regulatory instruments for the operation of the power sector, the Chairman of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC), Prof. Frank Okafor, said the state is committed to maintaining high standards within the industry.
According to him, the newly introduced regulatory framework is designed to ensure that consumers receive value for their money, while investors can recover their investments and generate profits.
“There must be standards guiding the power sector in Anambra State, and once those standards are maintained, the sector will operate smoothly for the benefit of everyone,” Okafor stated.
He described the signing ceremony as a major milestone for ASERC, noting that the future development of Anambra state’s electricity sector would largely depend on the effectiveness of the regulations being introduced.
“We want to ensure that the regulations are properly structured so that every participant in the sector understands their responsibilities and rights,” he added.
Okafor also assured potential investors that the regulatory instruments would create a conducive environment for investment and sustainable operations in the power sector.
Addressing FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company, a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and currently the only distribution company operating in the state, he warned that monopoly would not be encouraged.
“Legal monopoly will not be tolerated in Anambra. We expect FirstPower to earn the trust of residents through quality service delivery if it hopes to maintain dominance in the market,” he said.
He further expressed optimism that more investors would enter the sector, encouraging healthy competition that would ultimately improve electricity services across the state.
The event also featured the official signing of the regulatory framework by Prof. Frank Okafor and was attended by major stakeholders in the power sector, including the Commissioner for Power, Mr. Casmir Agumadu, Chairman of FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company, Dr. Okechukwu Okafor, and senior officials of the commission.
