In an attempt to put a stop to the Monday sit-at-home order imposed by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra across the state, the Anambra State Government announced that it is starting a pro rata salary payment for workers throughout the state.

The administration announced that pro rata payments will be made to state civil personnel effective February 2026.

Law Mefor, the state commissioner for information, told reporters on Saturday in Awka that the initiative was reached at the Anambra State Executive Council’s end-of-tenure retreat.

Regarding the calculation of the pro-rata payment, the commissioner stated that a worker’s wage would be divided by the number of working days in a month to determine what they would receive at the end of the month.

“The thing has to be done. Four years is enough. The economic loss of the sit-at-home runs into trillions since it started, according to an international firm.”

“It is a decision the state government has taken, and the implementation is already ongoing,” Mefor said.

He revealed that the retreat was organised to assess the actions of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration during its final four years in office and to develop a more focused agenda for the upcoming term, which will begin on March 17, 2026.

According to the commissioner, the retreat noted that Anambra public and civil servants had been skipping work on Mondays for the previous four years, blaming insecurity and a lack of transportation.

He said, “The retreat acknowledged that even though these factors existed in the past, they no longer exist, making them invalid reasons for absenteeism from work. The workers were simply enjoying the sit-at-home because they know that whether they come to work or not, they will be paid salaries.

He added, “Any day civil servants fail to come to work, it means that the state government’s business will stagnate and, by implication, the economy of the state will stagnate. Income accruable to the government will be lost, and there’s no guarantee that such losses can be recovered.

He added that the Anambra state government is increasing security in order to improve traders’ confidence to come out on Mondays and conduct their lawful activities, and that conversations are already underway to persuade market leaders to recognise the benefits of opening markets on Mondays.
