The decision followed a tense meeting in Abuja, during which members sharply debated the political implications of the governor’s possible defection.

Speaking after the meeting, the caucus’ acting secretary, Dabo Ismail, said the committee would define the group’s conditions and expectations should the governor eventually join the APC.

He added that the team would also engage with key stakeholders and represent the caucus in all discussions regarding potential defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government.

According to him, “the committee will also keep members updated on the progress of discussions.”

Ismail stressed that the governor is welcome in the APC, but urged the party’s national leadership to involve state stakeholders in the process.

He described the move as a “democratic mechanism” meant to manage differing opinions while keeping the party united.

However, concerns were raised about how the issue has been handled so far.

The senator representing Bauchi North and chairman of the caucus, Sama’ila Dahuwa, criticised the APC national leadership for failing to consult them before taking steps on such an important matter.

He said the lack of consultation is “unacceptable” and warned against forcing decisions on party members without proper engagement.

He added that the newly formed committee includes senior party figures such as a serving minister, former governors, and two senators.

The caucus also agreed to officially present its concerns to the party’s national leadership, insisting that due process must be followed.
