Atiku praises Abdulsalami at 84, says his national interest helped usher in democracy

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said that the national interest demonstrated by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, helped usher in Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

Atiku made the remark in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday while celebrating Abdulsalami on his 84th birthday.

He described Abdulsalami as a statesman whose commitment to peace, national unity, reconciliation, and democratic values has continued to distinguish him.

“At a critical period in our nation’s history, you placed national interest above personal ambition and guided the country through a peaceful transition that restored democratic governance. That singular act of statesmanship secured your place among the architects of modern Nigeria,” he wrote.

He further noted that Abdulsalami’s life reflects rare wisdom, courage, and moderation, adding that his legacy continues to serve as an example of selfless leadership.

Atiku also said Abdulsalami’s experience and moral authority remain valuable to Nigeria and Africa in promoting peace, unity, and good governance.

He prayed for continued good health, strength, and long life for the former military ruler.
