In a major move to make cancer treatment more affordable and accessible, the Nigerian Federal Government has announced an exciting new initiative. Through a partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the government will now offer subsidies of up to N400,000 for radiotherapy treatment for patients with lower incomes. This is a big step towards ensuring more Nigerians can get the life-saving care they need.

The exciting news was shared by the Federal Ministry of Health on their official X (formerly Twitter) page. This announcement came shortly after the opening of three brand-new, world-class cancer treatment centers in Katsina, Nsukka, and Benin.

These new centers are not just equipped with the latest diagnostic tools and radiotherapy machines; they’re also designed to be training hubs. Over the next three years, they will help train more than 500 oncology clinicians – that’s a huge boost for Nigeria’s medical expertise in cancer care!

These state-of-the-art facilities were built through a smart partnership between the government (specifically the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority or NSIA) and its healthcare arm, MedServe.

More Centers on the Way!

The Ministry of Health didn’t stop there. They also revealed that seven more oncology centers are currently being built across the country. The goal is to have all of them ready and officially opened by World Cancer Day in 2026.

These upcoming centers will be located in crucial areas like Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, and Yola, among others. The government believes these new facilities will create a strong foundation for earlier diagnosis, better treatment outcomes, and improved survival rates for Nigerians battling cancer. As the Ministry put it, “Together, we are building a healthier future — one centre at a time.”

The newly opened centers are specifically located at:

The inauguration ceremony was led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, along with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, and the Minister of Information, Alhaji Muhammad Idris Malagi, highlighting the government’s strong commitment to this critical health initiative.

This effort is a key part of the government’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which aims to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on citizens traveling abroad for medical treatment (known as “medical tourism”) and to strengthen top-tier healthcare infrastructure right here at home.
