Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Turkur Buratai, has raised questions over the Nigerian military’s ability to track bandits.

Buratai noted that if the military has the capacity to track and locate ordinary citizens of the country, then they can also track bandits.

The former chief of army staff said this on Monday while fielding questions in an interview on TVC.

He said this while sharing his thoughts on the ability of the Nigerian troops have what it takes to rescue the abducted Oyo schoolchildren and teachers.

Recall that on May 15, gunmen abducted about 39 schoolchildren and staff in two schools in Oyo State and subsequently beheaded one of the teachers.

Buratai said, “I don’t believe security agencies cannot locate bandits if they can locate ordinary citizens and social media influencers.

“However, I would not like to say a capacity building challenge, but I think they may have their reasons, but what I know is that there must be capacity building of all the security agencies.

“We need more troops to be recruited, more operatives, more policemen need to be recruited, trained and retrained.”

BACKSTORY…

His remark comes barely three months after the ex army chief said that Nigeria cannot overcome insecurity by relying solely on the military, further warning that such dependence could undermine long-term stability.

Buratai disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television. He also stressed that addressing threats from groups like Boko Haram requires the involvement of all sectors, not just the armed forces.
