Akpabio noted an increase in jailbreak incidents since prisons were renamed correctional centres.
During a Senate session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio remarked on the increase in jailbreak incidents following the renaming of the Nigerian Prison Service to the Nigerian Correctional Service. Akpabio made these comments while discussing two bills slated for concurrence. One bill aimed to repeal and enact laws governing the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, while the other focused on repealing the Fire Service Act and establishing the Federal Fire and Rescue Service.
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro argued against the name change, suggesting that the rescue component was already within the fire service’s jurisdiction. Responding to Moro’s point, Akpabio emphasized the importance of reviewing such laws, highlighting the surge in jailbreaks since the correctional centres’ establishment.
The renaming of the Nigerian Prison Service to the Nigerian Correctional Service occurred in 2019 when former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the bill into law. The legislation redefined the correctional service, distinguishing between custodial and non-custodial services. While custodial services focus on incarceration, non-custodial measures offer alternatives like community service, probation, and parole. Since the enactment of this law, numerous jailbreak incidents have been reported across the country, including the escape of 119 inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger state.
