Kogi state authorities claim that the charges brought against Bello by the EFCC are politically driven.

The Kogi State Government has refuted the corruption allegations made against former Governor Yahaya Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing them as baseless and politically motivated.

In an amended charge filed against the Chief of Staff to the current Governor, Alli Bello, the EFCC implicated the former governor, accusing him of diverting approximately N100 billion before assuming office in September 2015.

The state Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, released a statement on Friday, asserting that the alleged missing funds do not exist and accusing the EFCC of targeting Bello for political reasons.

Fanwo stated, “We inherited the zero tolerance for corruption policy from the immediate past administration of Governor Yahaya Bello.

Fanwo stated, “We inherited the zero tolerance for corruption policy from the immediate past administration of Governor Yahaya Bello. However, the EFCC’s relentless pursuit of baseless corruption claims against our government and officials is unjustifiable.”

He further clarified, “Kogi’s funds are intact, and the EFCC’s efforts to find missing funds are unfounded. We urge the EFCC to cease its unwarranted persecution, orchestrated by certain political figures, aimed at tarnishing Bello’s reputation.”

Fanwo called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate a special investigation into the situation in Kogi State to prevent the EFCC from being manipulated by political interests.
