In a recent war of words regarding capacity evaluation between Dangote Refinery and NMDPRA, the president of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, said his refinery can meet Nigeria’s daily fuel needs as they have over N600 billion worth of fuel in storage.
Dangote revealed this when Makozo Chikote, Zambia’s Minister for Energy, paid a visit to the 650,000 barrels per day refinery. He said the refinery can 100% cater to the local needs of Nigerians.

Dangote said, “As we speak right now, we have more than half a billion liters.
“The refinery is producing enough refined products, like gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, to meet 100 percent of Nigeria’s requirements.
“We have more than enough. The refinery is producing enough refined products, like gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, to meet 100 percent of Nigeria’s requirements.”

He also emphasized that the refinery’s capacity exceeds catering for Nigeria’s premium motor spirit consumption, as it will also serve Africa as well.
“This refinery is not only for Nigeria; it is for Africa,” he said.
“We must sustain the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) deal. We are trying to see how we trade with other African countries.”
These follow comments from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), which recently said that local refineries, including Dangote Refinery, did not meet up to 50% of Nigeria’s fuel requirements in February.
They also made more comments that NNPCL has continued to import fuel. However, NNPC denied this speculation.
