FG Challenges 36 Governors in Supreme Court for LG Autonomy.
The Federal Government (FG) has filed a lawsuit against the governors of Nigeria’s 36 states at the Supreme Court, seeking full autonomy for local government areas (LGAs). The suit, marked SC/CV/343/2024 and filed by Attorney General Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, challenges the governors’ alleged misconduct in LGA administration.
The FG requests the court to:
- Prohibit governors from dissolving elected LGA leaders unilaterally.
- Ensure LGA funds are directly distributed from the federation account.
- Stop governors from forming caretaker committees for LGAs.
- Restrict governors from accessing LGA funds without a democratically elected system in place.
The FG argues that the Constitution mandates a democratically elected LGA system and that governors’ actions undermine constitutional provisions. The FG seeks a Supreme Court declaration enforcing these constitutional requirements on state governors and legislatures.
