Breaking news: Aliko Dangote has chosen to immortalize Herbert Wigwe by dedicating a road near the Lagos refinery to him.
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest individual, has paid tribute to the late Access Bank CEO, Herbert Wigwe, by immortalizing him. Dangote has named the road leading to the Dangote Refinery in Lagos as Herbert Wigwe Road. This announcement was made during the Night of Tribute for the late banker on Monday, March 4, 2024. Dangote praised Herbert as not only a loyal friend but also a steadfast support system. He further hailed him as a visionary role model characterized by unparalleled courage.
“In honor of my cherished friend, brother, and mentee, I have made the decision to dedicate a significant portion of the refinery and petrochemical road, spanning 120 kilometers, as ‘Herbert Wigwe.’ This road, the largest among them, will now bear his name.”
“I am deeply proud to recognize him as not just a devoted friend but also a mentee and unwavering supporter. The warmth of his friendship will always hold a special place in my heart,” remarked Dangote.

The tragic demise of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the Group CEO of Access Bank, along with his wife Doreen Wigwe, son Chizi Wigwe, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, in a helicopter crash in the United States has shocked many. The chartered helicopter was en route from Palm Springs to Boulder City in Nevada when the accident occurred approximately 96km (60 miles) from Las Vegas.
