Mpox declared public health emergency in Africa.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has declared mpox a public health emergency across the continent. This decision followed a thorough assessment revealing that the prevalence of mpox might be underestimated due to inadequate diagnostic systems. The CDC is concerned that the fatality rate could increase, particularly among individuals with existing health conditions like HIV/AIDS.
The declaration was supported unanimously by the Africa CDC’s Emergency Consultative Group, which reviewed all available epidemiological evidence. Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, spreads through contact with infected individuals, materials, or animals.
Since January 2022, Africa has reported approximately 38,465 mpox cases and 1,456 deaths across 16 countries. As of mid-July 2024, Nigeria has identified 102 new suspected cases in 18 states, though no deaths have been recorded this year.
