Nigeria’s Tinubu Calls for Debt Forgiveness, Global Cooperation at UNGA79

Debt Forgiveness and Economic Relief for Developing Nations

At the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, urged world leaders to consider debt forgiveness for Nigeria and other developing nations. Tinubu emphasized the need to reduce fiscal burdens to foster sustainable economic progress, especially in countries from the Global South. He argued that comprehensive debt relief and reforms in the international financial system would enable these nations to pursue sustainable development.

Tackling Global Hunger, Terrorism, and Conflict Prevention

President Tinubu highlighted that hunger, terrorism, and other conflicts remain significant global challenges. He called for more international cooperation to address these issues, suggesting that global action rooted in inclusivity and equality is the best path to lasting solutions. Tinubu lamented how nationalist and self-centered policies were hindering global progress, stressing that collective efforts are essential for a peaceful and secure world.

Reforms in International Financial and Trading Systems

Tinubu’s speech also touched on the need for significant reforms in international financial institutions and trade systems. He called for a more transparent and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system to level the playing field for developing countries. Tinubu expressed hope that adopting the “Pact for the Future” would help reposition economies, giving developing nations the tools they need to thrive.

Nigeria’s Call for Return of Illicit Funds

In a firm stance against corruption, Tinubu stressed the importance of recovering stolen assets and illicit financial flows. He called on the international community to take practical steps to recover such funds and return them to their countries of origin. According to Tinubu, doing so is a fundamental part of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

UN’s Role in Addressing Global Insecurity

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to global peace initiatives, pointing out that insecurity, terrorism, and insurgency continue to affect the confidence of citizens in democratic governance. He reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to counterterrorism, referencing the “Abuja Declaration” made at the High-Level African Counter-Terrorism Meeting in 2024. Tinubu called for the international community to work together in combating terrorism and restoring peace.

Climate Change and Its Impact on Developing Nations

Tinubu also touched on climate change, describing it as an existential threat that exacerbates insecurity and undermines development. He reminded world leaders of the devastating floods in Nigeria, specifically in the North-East city of Maiduguri. He urged them to honor their commitments made at the COP meetings, warning that ignoring the climate crisis would only delay inevitable consequences.

Push for Africa’s Representation on the UN Security Council

The Nigerian president further stressed the need for reforms in the UN Security Council, calling for permanent seats for African nations. He urged the UN to recognize Africa’s significance in global affairs and ensure that it is properly represented. According to Tinubu, the Security Council’s credibility and relevance depend on reflecting the diversity of today’s world.
