Soaring Costs: Drugs Now 100% Pricier for Nigerians

The prices of drugs in Nigeria has risen more than 100% ahead of Christmas, making it the worse financial burden and raising concerns about accessing essential medication during the festive season. Prices of common drugs such for treating  malaria and high blood pressure have more than doubled in some cases, survey conducted in Lagos and Abuja.

A 135% increase in the prices of some anti malaria drugs and 83% for some drugs which is used in managing high blood pressure. The sharp price increase are not just limited to these drugs. Others essential treatments like antibiotics and insulin have also experienced serious hikes up to 157%, placing an additional financial burden on families already.

Pharmacists are saying, the weak naira and inflation have continually spiked the pharmaceutical raw materials used in the manufacturing of drugs, over 80% of the production components are imported.
