Women Central Bank Governors Up by 26%, But Share Still Low – IMF.
IMF Report: 26% Increase in Women Central Bank Governors, Yet Gender Parity Remains Elusive”
The IMF’s recent report highlights a notable 26% rise in the number of women serving as Central Bank governors over the past year, increasing from 23 to 29 female governors globally. Despite this progress, women still represent only 16% of leadership positions across 185 Central Banks. The report underscores that while the appointment of women to these crucial roles is at a record high, gender parity is still far from being achieved. The IMF’s findings suggest that greater gender balance in senior financial roles could lead to more diverse perspectives and improved economic stability. This trend is particularly evident in smaller economies, with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Papua New Guinea cited as recent examples of this shift towards gender inclusivity in monetary leadership. However, significant challenges remain, especially in larger economies, where women are still underrepresented in economics and financial leadership roles.
