Youths’ protests trigger nationwide sit-at-home
On August 1, 2024, nationwide protests in Nigeria led to significant disruptions and violence. Four people died in Kaduna and Niger states, while Abuja witnessed shootings and looting. Many businesses, including banks and shops, were shut down due to fears of violence similar to the #EndSARS protests of 2020. In Lagos, businesses closed as protesters marched to voice their grievances over high living costs.
In Abuja, clashes occurred at the Federal Secretariat as police used teargas to disperse protesters. Violence also erupted in other areas, including Lafia in Nasarawa State, where hoodlums burned tyres and clashed with security forces. In Kano, looters targeted public infrastructure and private properties, including the Digital Innovation Park.
The protests, organized by Nigerian youths, demanded better governance and economic conditions. Despite some peaceful demonstrations, incidents of violence and looting marred the nationwide protests.
