Bye-Election: Wike Dismisses Rivals, Says PDP Remains Main Opposition Party

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has firmly declared that the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), is the only credible opposition party with capacity to challenge the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Wike made the claims on Monday while congratulating President Bola Tinubu on the APC’s victory in Saturday’s bye-elections across Nigeria.

He spoke during the commissioning of the Water Supply Network to Karu Satellite Town as part of projects marking Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

According to the FCT minister, the PDP remains the leading opposition party in Nigeria.

He said: “Let me use this opportunity to congratulate your party for winning Saturday’s bye-elections and also congratulate my party for maintaining its position as the opposition.

“In every political setting, there must be winners and an opposition. Today, we have seen the ruling party and the opposition party.

“The opposition is not about talking but about challenging the ruling party, and we are the only party challenging the ruling party. Therefore, we are the leading opposition party.”

Wike Working For Tinubu

The minister’s claims comes amid talks and speculations that he is working for the ultimate advantage of president Tinubu ahead of 2027.

One of the strongest points cited by critics is Wike’s own statement in 2023 that he worked for Tinubu’s election victory and was serving in Tinubu’s government. He stated that he was “working for Tinubu, not APC,” while insisting he remained a PDP member.

Additionally, political analysts and opposition figures have repeatedly alleged that Wike’s actions—from the G5 rebellion before the 2023 election to his continued influence within PDP structures—have benefited Tinubu politically by deepening divisions within the opposition. While these claims remain political allegations, they have become a recurring theme in Nigerian political discourse.

BACKSTORY…

Recall that just three days ago President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered what appeared to be his strongest public endorsement yet of the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, affirming that the former Rivers State governor has justified the confidence placed in him to transform Abuja into a modern capital city.
