Herdsmen attack four Ondo communities, kill 20

About 20 farmers have been confirmed dead following a brutal attack by herdsmen on four communities in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The attack, which occurred at midnight on Saturday March 8, was confirmed by the Ogun State  Police command’s spokesperson Funmilayo Omisanya (CSP)

According to Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, the herdsmen launched an attack on four communities, all situated about 20 minutes away from Akure, the state’s capital.

The affected communities included; Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, Ademekun Camp, and Aba Alajido Camps, all situated within the Ala Elefosan area.

Princess Adelowo Adekemisola, the Regent of Ademekun Village, while recounting her ordeal during a town hall meeting with representatives of the state government stated that armed herdsmen stormed her community around midnight, firing shots indiscriminately for several hours. Unfortunately, the attack resulted in the loss of 14 lives.

The meeting, which took place at the Adegbemile Cultural Centre in Akure, was reported to have been organized for cocoa farmers.

The Regent expressed her frustration and disappointment stating that her community had suffered repeated attacks by herdsmen without any meaningful intervention from security agencies.

She also revealed that the invaders were believed to have entered the community through the Edo/Ondo boundary.

Reports disclosed that search parties have recovered 14 corpses in the past 48 hours. Unfortunately, some residents of the affected communities are still missing. A source further revealed that over 20 people lost their lives during the herdsmen’s attack.

Odunlami-Omisanya assured residents that the Police and other security agencies are working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrators of the terrible crime.

In recent months, Ondo State has witnessed a increase in crime incidents. In a recent incident, a police officer was abducted by kidnappers while in uniform. Fortunately, he was rescued by his colleagues a few days later.
