On Monday, May 5, four men, Nafi’u Isah, Haruna Ya’u, Nadabo Mohammed and Sa’adu Musa, were sentenced to 40 years and six months imprisonment each for armed robbery and attempted murder by a Kano High Court.

These suspects were convicted on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, attempted murder and causing grievous harm.

Delivering judgment, Justice Usman Na’abba, held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Na’abba, therefore, sentenced the convicts to six months’ imprisonment each for conspiracy and 20 years’ imprisonment each for armed robbery

He also sentenced the convicts to 10 years’ imprisonment each for attempted murder and five years’ imprisonment each for causing grievous hurt.

The judge ordered the convicts to pay the complainant the sum of N650,000, which they collected from him or spend an additional five years each in prison.

The judge said the sentences would run concurrently.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the convicts committed the offence on May 1, 2022, at Kunkurawa Village in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, Kano.

He said that on the same date at about 1:00 am, the convicts criminally conspired while armed with guns, sticks, cutlasses and broke into the house of one Haruna Shehu situated at Kunkurawa Village, Kano.

“The defendants beat the complainant and members of his family, causing grievous injury to his son, Ado Haruna Shehu. The convicts also robbed Shehu and members of his family of the sum of N650,000,” he said.

The prosecution presented six witnesses and exhibits to prove their case against the convicts.

The convicts, however, denied committing the offence.

Abba-Sorondinki said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 97, 298(c), 230(a) and 349 of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State, 1991

The Defence Counsel, Mr Sani Idris, presented the convicts to testify in their own defence.
