Dangote Refinery has sued the Nigerian government over new fuel import permits issued to marketers and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

According to Reuters, the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery asked the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday to nullify the import permits granted or renewed by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

Recall that despite Dangote Refinery’s about 79% ability to meet domestic fuel supply demand, stakeholders have protested the issuance of new gasoline import licenses to six petroleum marketers.

According to NMDPRA’s industry data, Dangote Refinery supplied 79% of Nigeria’s petrol consumption in April 2026.

However, NMDPRA had continued on awarding new permits notwithstanding the advise of industrial experts.
Responding, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has filed a fresh lawsuit against the Federal Government, seeking to cancel petroleum import permits granted to the NNPC and marketers. It further accused the Nigerian government of policy inconsistency despite its professed Nigerian-first agenda.

The Refinery filed a suit to revoke the import permits granted to the NNPCL and several traders in order to protect the gains of domestic refining.

In the filing, Dangote argued that the May licences disrupt its operations and breach the law, which allows imports only when local supply falls short.

Recall that in 2025, the Federal Government intervened to halt Dangote Refinery’s previous litigation against importers.

According to sources, the Refinery dispenses gasoline for N1,200 per litre, while importers sell it for between N1,285 and N1,295 per litre.
