Demolition man, Wike orders immediate demolition of 30 buildings blocking Abuja Ring Road 3

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and now Abuja’s demolition man has ordered the immediate demolition of roughly thirty structures found encroaching on the right-of-way along the Ring Road 3 corridor in Abuja.

The directive aims to clear the designated Right-of-Way to facilitate the uninterrupted construction of the Ring Road 3 corridor and its associated interchange infrastructure.

Wike issued the order during an inspection of ongoing road development projects connecting the Karsana District, Gwarinpa, and Kubwa axes on Thursday, expressing strong dissatisfaction over the erection of buildings directly within an approved major interchange corridor.

Following a briefing by Richard Dauda, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), who highlighted the structures obstructing the project corridor, the minister intervened.

Dauda explained that the affected buildings were situated within an area designated by the Abuja Master Plan for Ring Road 3 infrastructure.

In response to the report, Wike summoned representatives of the Department of Development Control and instructed them to take immediate action against the structures.

“We’ll have to demolish this right now. Demolish the building down,” Wike ordered.

Expressing disbelief that structures could have been permitted within the designated corridor, the minister added: “How can it be like this? It’s even a road, it’s not even a layout—it’s an interchange, the leg.”

He noted that the directive underscores the FCT Administration’s renewed commitment to enforcing the Abuja Master Plan and preventing private developments from encroaching on major transportation infrastructure.

At the project site, Dauda informed journalists that construction on the corridor’s second bridge was progressing despite challenging, rocky terrain.

Backstory…

Wike’s latest demolition order comes just a day after he launched a wider crackdown on structures and activities blamed for worsening flooding in Abuja.

The FCT minister had ordered the removal of buildings obstructing designated waterways after torrential rainfall on August 15 caused flooding in several parts of the capital, including Wuse 2, Gudu, Lokogoma and Gaduwa.

Meanwhile, the title- Demolition man stems from his recent fearless and bold orders for the demolition of structures across the city including businesses.

The minister also announced a separate crackdown on the conversion of Abuja’s green areas, parks and gardens into car dealership lots. He ordered the immediate removal of unauthorised car dealers from such spaces and established a task force to enforce the directive.

The minister has made it clear that such developments would not be allowed to frustrate government projects, insisting that the integrity of the Abuja Master Plan must be protected.
