Brutal! Woman Gets 178 Lashes for Ditching Hijab
An Iranian activist has been sentenced to 178 lashes and 18 months’ imprisonment for having been arrested for not wearing a hijab.
Hamideh Zarei is a Gilak activist and former political prisoner who had only recently received her release from Rasht Central Prison after spending nearly a month there, only for a new sentence to be passed on her.

The verdict against her contained nine months of imprisonment and 74 lashes for “disrupting public order,” nine months for “resisting law enforcement officers,” 74 lashes for “insulting an officer on duty,” and 30 lashes for “inflicting non-visible injuries.”
This master’s student at Tehran University was dragged into this ordeal on February 3 when she was at the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor Office in Rasht, as part of a forced residency sentence.
The hijabi had been the initial cause of her arrest, leading to the new charges.
According to a report from the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Zarei had spent 29 days in detention in Rasht Central Prison until her release on bail on March 3.

It was reported that during her detention, she was beaten by two officers from the Rasht Prosecutor’s Office Protection Unit, leaving her with wrist injuries and serious bruising.
But this is just the latest vignette in the regime’s unending targeting of Zarei. Her problems with the Iranian authorities started in 2022.
In November 2023, the Karaj Revolutionary Court, with Judge Mousa Asafolhosseini, sentenced her to one year for “propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
After the acceptance of the judgment, the duration was later reduced to nine months. Zarei was first detained in Karaj on May 29, 2023, and imprisoned in Kachouii Prison until her release on February 22, 2024, after serving her sentence.
Notwithstanding, she was also banned from travelling and using social media for two years and was forced into exile in Rasht.

Her first known arrest was on November 3, 2022, when she was detained for attending a memorial marking 40 days since the killing of Hadis Najafi, a young woman shot dead by security forces during the 2022 protests.
She was imprisoned in Kachouii Prison until her release on February 7, 2024, under a so-called ‘pardon’ directive.
Her case is yet another instance of the brutal beating of women rights activists in Iran.
