African American Hollywood actor, Djimon Hounsou, talks about his current financial status, how he is being underpaid, and the racism in Hollywood
On his appearance on African Voices Changemakers, the popular CNN magazine program, Hollywood actor Djimon Hounsou has revealed he is still underpaid despite being in Hollywood for over 20 years as an actor.
The Beninese-American actor said he still struggles to pay his bills and that the movies he has done are not a true reflection of his financial status.
Hounsou said, “I’m still struggling to make a living. I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid.”
He further went on to express his dissatisfaction with Hollywood and its stand on racism.
“I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars because they thought that I had just come off the boat and the streets. Even though I successfully did that, they just didn’t feel like I was an actor to whom they should pay any respect.
“So, this conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon.”
Djimon Hounsou is popularly known for his role in Blood Diamond, where he partnered with star actor Leonardo DiCaprio to deliver a masterpiece.
He has several movies to his name, such as Gladiator, A Quiet Place, Guardians of the Galaxy, Rebel Moon, Amistad, Shazam, and Black Adam, amongst others.
He is currently 60 years old and was formerly a partner to Kimora Lee Simmons.
