Gospel singer Osinachi Joseph Egbu, popularly known as Sinach, is facing a N5 billion lawsuit from music producer Michael Oluwole, also called Maye.
The producer claims joint ownership of Sinach’s globally celebrated hit Way Maker, sparking widespread discussions online.
The case, heard on November 27, 2024, at the Federal High Court in Lagos, saw Maye demanding co-ownership of the 2015 song, royalties, and damages.
According to Maye, his contributions to the song include recording, mixing, mastering, and creating key instrumentals such as piano, strings, and synthesizers.
He alleged that Sinach has unfairly kept all the proceeds from the song, describing her actions as “deliberate and oppressive.”
Maye is seeking compensation of N5 billion for his efforts. He also wants the court to enforce equitable revenue sharing from the song’s licenses and copyrights, a perpetual ban on unauthorized reproductions, and recognition of his performer’s rights.
Sinach’s legal team, however, denies the allegations. Her lawyer, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), argued that Sinach was the sole creator of Way Maker, having composed, arranged, and performed it before Maye’s involvement.
Etiaba emphasized that Maye’s role was limited to mixing the song’s master recording, for which he was fully paid. The lawyer stated that Maye has no claim to the song’s copyright or publishing income.
Fans have been buzzing about the lawsuit, with reactions pouring in on social media. Some criticized the timing of Maye’s claim, given that Way Maker was released nearly a decade ago.
@okm_herbal commented, “Sinach, who’s never been involved in scandals? Maybe the guy’s broke and needs cash.”
@dee_dapper_dan added, “After all these years, now he remembers he was the producer?”
@geezzyh joked, “Let me sue my gateman for N7 billion since he sleeps on duty.”
Others hoped for a fair resolution, regardless of the controversy.
The lawsuit has caught many off guard, especially since Sinach is known for her impeccable reputation and contributions to gospel music.
As the case unfolds, fans are eager to see how the court will handle this dramatic dispute over one of the most iconic gospel songs of recent years.
