Nigerians give Fathia Williams History lessons on X

Om Tuesday, 22nd of October; Fathia Williams made a tweet on X to announce her latest project.

“Power. Trade. Legacy. She was more than a warrior, she was a ruler who rewrote history.

‘Efunroye: The Unicorn’ is coming to your screens soon!

Are you ready?” The tweet read.

While some Nigerians applauded and encouraged the renowned filmmaker, most Nigerians were outraged. They were particularly triggered by Fathia’s caption and they didn’t hold back in expressing their displeasure.

What are Nigerians saying about this?

@noobsaaibot89

This Woman was a slave trader, in fact she was one of the people who didn’t want slavery to end. I’ve always wondered why people like her are celebrated.

@agodliveshere

Same you, Africans who say you are victims of slavery and forced labour by the Whites are now building monuments and making movies to honour your own people who sold you as slaves to whites.

You hate the slave buyers but are hailing the slave sellers as “unicorn” who “re-wrote history”. The yoke is heavy.

@omorogiec

The problem is that; our people don’t even know their own history.

If they do, no one would be lionising a known slave seller, someone who throughout her lifetime was selling her own people as slaves.

It’s a shame, O’ma see o!

@philsbaba

Since history is not being taught in school anymore, it’s great to see Nollywood stepping up and reenacting historical events in their scripts to bridge the knowledge gap in a captivating way.

We love to see more of this. Keep it up

@Merald_Ayomi

Just as Tinubu is rewriting the present

@aikaystalin024

Hope u captured in the movie, the fact that she was an evil criminal & a notorious slave trader. She wiped out villages to secure slaves to sell. When the British declared slave trade over she persisted with the trade. Even the Brits were shocked at her cruelty. She’s no heroine.

Unable to ignore the outrage of Nigerians, Fathia made another post in response to their tweets.

Fathia certainly has her work cut out for her, as Nigerians now await her film with renewed interest.
