Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the exciting news in February 2024, revealing that Moana’s story will continue in a full-length movie. The project originally began as a television series, but after seeing impressive footage, Iger greenlit it as a theatrical release.

The new film promises a thrilling journey for Moana and Maui, voiced once again by Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson (though Johnson will not be voicing Maui in the separate live-action remake). While details about the plot are still under wraps, a press release hints at “a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers” joining Moana on her quest.
The official synopsis describes Moana receiving “an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors,” prompting her to embark on a perilous voyage across “dangerous, long-lost waters.”
Meet the Crew Behind the Sequel
Taking the helm of this exciting adventure is Dave Derrick Jr., a veteran Disney artist with experience on projects like “The Lion King,” “Encanto,” and “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
The musical score promises to be equally enchanting, with a team of Grammy winners and nominees crafting new tunes. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, known for their viral “Bridgerton Musical” album, will collaborate with Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and Grammy winner Mark Mancina. While Lin-Manuel Miranda, the original film’s composer, won’t be returning, fans can expect a fresh wave of music to accompany Moana’s journey.
