Nigerian Hit Series “Smart Money Woman” Ditches Netflix and Makes Surprise Move to YouTube.

Nigeria’s hit series “Smart Money Woman” is making a surprise move to YouTube for its second season, after Netflix ultimately passed on acquiring the highly anticipated series.

Meanwhile, other major players in the African market are stepping back: Prime Video has frozen its operations, and Showmax’s slate appetite is insufficient to meet the demand for high-quality content.

But that didn’t stop the directors Bunmi Ajakaiye and Wande Thomas as they made the shocking decision to switch to Youtube. The shift to YouTube signals a significant change in the balance of power, but also poses a challenge for them.

Due to YouTube’s monetization laws, it generally favors long-form content, such as feature films, over episodic series like ‘The Smart Money Woman’.

Additionally, the platform’s revenue-sharing structure and algorithm prioritize consistency and viewer engagement over short-term gains.

What this means is that the creators of  “Smart Money Woman” would have boldly adopt a long-game strategy, building audience loyalty and engagement over time.

However, the YouTube premiere of “Smart Money Woman” Season 2 hopes to capitalize on the franchise’s existing momentum.

Having accumulated 500,000 views for its first season that was recently uploaded on the channel. it is predicted that the channel would experience a 300% increase to 2 million views within the first month.

“The Smart Money Woman Season Two” will hit the Azuwa Studios YouTube channel on Oct. 31st.

And every Thursday, two new episodes will drop, with Episodes 1 & 2 arriving on the 31st, Episodes 3 & 4 premiere on Nov. 7, Episodes 5 & 6 drop on November 14, Episodes 7 & 8 debuts  November 21 and a two-part season finale debuting on November 28.
