Female Students Now Sell Eggs for Quick Money – Uni
The authorities of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, in Oyo State, expressed concern about the alarming trend of several agencies and individuals recruiting female students from various tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the egg donation procedure of in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
In a memo dated April 15, 2025, but seen but on Friday, the University Health Service pointed out that egg donation has brought hope to families facing infertility issues but should not be seen as a permanent source of income or considered a side hustle.
The internal memo was signed by the Director of the University Health Services, Dr Aderonke Ajayi.
Ajayi lamented the growing trend within the university community involving the recruitment and participation of female students as egg donors for in-Vitro Fertilisation, often through individuals, agents, or agencies.
She explained that egg donation involves the use of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries, a process that carries several short-term health risks.
Such risks include abdominal discomfort, swelling of the breast, ballooning of the abdomen, and mood changes, along with a condition known as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome.
Other risks include infections, bleeding, torsion of the ovary, injury to internal organs (for example, injury to the bladder and bowel) and psychological distress.
“It has come to our knowledge that there is a growing trend within the university community involving the participation and/or recruitment of female students as egg donors for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) by individuals, agents, or agencies.
“Egg donation has brought hope to many families out there struggling with infertility, yet it should not be regarded as a permanent source of income or an alternative ‘side hustle’.
“Egg donation involves the use of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries. This process carries with it several short-term risks such as an abdominal pain, tenderness of the breast, bloating, mood swings, Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), infection and bleeding, ovarian torsion, and potential injury to the bladder, nearby blood vessels and bowel, and psychological distress,” the director said.
The expert warned that some egg donors have reported long-term effects, including the possibility of losing fertility, emphasizing that current research is still inconclusive about who is medically safe to donate eggs and the number of times that a person can safely do so.
Ajayi said considering safety, egg donation should not be done more than thrice a year, while encouraging the students always to go for reputable clinics that respond to medical guidelines and safety of the donor.
