Despite the absence of confirmed Ebola cases in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Interior has announced additional measures to strengthen the country’s preparedness against the virus.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the development in a statement posted on his official website.

According to the statement, the minister attended a high-level preparedness meeting in Lagos with government officials and emergency response partners at the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The statement reads in part, “While there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, we are not leaving anything to chance.”

The minister also said the government was partnering with the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, and other relevant agencies to strengthen monitoring and surveillance at Nigeria’s entry points.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Swings Into Action

Similarly, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) and Prevention has placed Lagos, the FCT and several other states on high Ebola alert.

This comes following the outbreak of the deadly Bundibugyo strain of Ebola Virus Disease in parts of East and Central Africa, particularly, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A national public health advisory has warned health commissioners across Nigeria that the country faces a significant risk of importing Ebola. The agency further cautioned that porous borders, increased regional transmission, international travel, and population migration drive this vulnerability.

Issued on May 27, 2026, the warning highlights mounting worries over the spread of Bundibugyo Ebola—a rare strain that currently lacks a licensed vaccine or targeted therapy.

Consequently, some states classified as high-risk include Lagos, the FCT, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, and Adamawa, as a result of their international airports, seaports, border routes, and high human traffic.
