Former President Jonathan Denies Alleged ₦500bn Political Deal

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed widespread claims that he was offered or involved in a ₦500 billion plot to influence voting in the South-South geopolitical zone ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Responding to the publication, Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, described the report as entirely false and misleading, urging Nigerians to disregard it.

Eze described the report as a fabrication intended to mislead the public and drag the former president into partisan political disputes.

According to Eze, the former president has never been part of any meeting, discussion or arrangement pertaining to the alleged ₦500bn offer and remains committed to the ideals of democracy, national unity and peaceful political engagement.

He emphasised that the former president has continuously maintained a statesmanlike posture after stepping down in 2015 by advocating for peace, sound governance, and legitimate democratic processes both within Nigeria and throughout Africa.

Additionally, Eze stated that it was regrettable that some people would turn to disseminating lies in an effort to damage Jonathan’s name and incite needless political unrest.

Speaking further, he warned that the spread of misleading information erodes public confidence and democratic ideals and urged media outlets and the general public to confirm sensitive political reports before publishing or disseminating them.

BACKSTORY…

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has repeatedly found himself at the centre of political speculation ahead of every election cycle despite maintaining a largely non-partisan public posture since leaving office in 2015.

In recent months, his name has resurfaced in discussions surrounding the 2027 general election, with various groups urging him to return to active politics or play a mediatory role amid growing opposition realignments.

The ex president has consistently distanced himself from partisan manoeuvres, insisting that his focus remains on peacebuilding, democracy promotion and good governance across Africa through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and international election observation missions.
