Francis Duru: 8 Memorable Nollywood Films That Keep His Legacy Alive

The Nigerian film industry has lost one of its familiar faces with the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, whose career spanned more than three decades and helped connect Nollywood’s early home-video era with its modern cinematic productions.

Although Duru appeared in numerous films throughout his career, his portrayal of young Ahanna in the 1995 classic Rattlesnake remains one of his most recognisable performances. His work in the film introduced him to a wider audience and helped establish his place in an industry that was rapidly growing in popularity across Nigeria and beyond.

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Francis Duru later moved to Nigeria, where he studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt.

He began his professional acting journey in 1989 with Missing Mark and went on to build a filmography that covered several genres and generations of Nigerian filmmaking.

His personal life also included profound challenges. In August 2024, Duru and his family suffered the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, a tragedy that attracted expressions of sympathy from colleagues and members of the public.

Duru was married to Adokiye, whom he met while they were undergraduates at the University of Port Harcourt. He is survived by his wife and children.
