Davido hints at music retirement

‘I Won’t Be 40 Competing With Artistes in Their 20s’ — Davido Hints at Music Break

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has hinted that he may take an extended break from music as he gets older.

The singer made the disclosure during an appearance on The Uncut Podcast, where he explained that he does not see himself remaining in the spotlight at 40 while competing with artistes in their 20s.

Davido, however, clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as suggesting that established musicians should retire from the industry.

He said, “Music is my blood but I’m not going to be 40 still dragging with guys in their 20s. Jay-z took a break and he is doing his thing,”

The 33-year-old artiste noted that his extensive music catalogue would allow him to step away from recording for several years and still return to significant commercial success.

According to him, he could take a decade away from music and still attract audiences for major tours because of the body of work he has already built.

He stated, “I can take a 10yrs break and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue. I might decide not to make another song for the rest of my life, and nobody is touching my catalogue,”

Davido further explained that music should provide artistes with opportunities to pursue other ventures rather than focusing solely on recording and performing.

“All I am saying is there are other things music should be able to help you branch out into,” he added.

The singer’s comments have sparked discussions among fans about his long-term plans and whether he could eventually take time away from the music industry while focusing on other business and personal ventures.

BACKSTORY:

Davido’s comments come as the Afrobeats superstar reflects on his long-term career and the direction he wants to take as he gets older.

The 33-year-old singer has remained one of Nigeria’s most prominent Afrobeats artistes, building a successful career with multiple hit songs, albums and international collaborations.

During his appearance on The Uncut Podcast, Davido said he does not see himself remaining in the intense competition of the music industry at 40, particularly against artistes in their 20s.

He cited American rapper Jay-Z as an example of an established artiste who took a break from music while continuing to maintain his relevance and influence.

Davido also stressed that having a strong music catalogue gives established artistes the freedom to step away from recording without necessarily losing their audience.

His remarks have therefore raised speculation about whether he could eventually take an extended break from music, although he did not announce a specific retirement date.
