Austin Okai, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has urged Igbo leaders to call the senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, to order over his remarks on the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

During Senate deliberations on the rising attacks, Kalu had cautioned lawmakers against actions that could damage diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa, stating that the countries should avoid undermining their bilateral ties.

While other senators advocated possible retaliatory measures if the attacks persist, Kalu insisted that Nigeria must not “destroy its relationship with South Africa,” accusing some lawmakers of using the issue for media attention.

Reacting in a post on Facebook, Okai criticized Kalu’s position, arguing that his comments were insensitive given that members of his own ethnic group are among those affected by the violence.

He questioned the senator’s stance and called on leaders from the South East to intervene.

“Why is Orji Kalu acting this way? His own people are among the primary victims of these barbaric xenophobic attacks, yet he appears indifferent. Are there no leaders in Igbo land who can caution him?” Okai wrote.

He added that he holds greater respect for senators such as Abdul Ningi and Adams Oshiomhole, stating that Kalu’s comments were disappointing.

Okai also noted that he had previously raised concerns about the issue during a television appearance and expressed satisfaction that the matter was now gaining wider attention.
