The Labour Party, has officially elected Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman at the party’s national convention held on Tuesday in Umuahia, Abia State.
Usman becomes the first woman in Nigerian history to be elected National Chairman of a political party.
Recall that Usman was named to head the party’s National Caretaker Committee at a NEC meeting in Umuahia on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in response to a leadership void left by the former National Working Committee’s term ending.

She led the party through a period of instability characterised by disagreements over leadership, which the appellate court finally decided in her favour.
Usman, a former senator and minister of finance, also offers a plethora of expertise and shown ability to her new position.
Following her emergence, she is now responsible for setting up the party for political success as the 2027 federal elections draw near.
Nenadi Usman will build on the Labour Party’s strengthened position as a powerful political platform, following its strong performance in the 2023 federal elections.
Meanwhile, INEC had acknowledged Usman as the Chairman of the Party’s National Caretaker Committee prior to the convention after a Federal High Court ruling on January 21, 2026, confirmed her leadership.
However, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the Court of Appeal unanimously upheld this ruling.
Reacting, Usman thanked party members for their faith in her during her acceptance speech and promised to reposition the party for greater success.

Nenadi Usman further applauded governor Alex Otti, and gave members her word that she would not fail the party. She also reiterated her dedication to promoting harmony, peace, and reconciliation within the party.
In his speech, Governor Otti tasked the recently elected National Working Committee with strengthening the party’s national institutions and exercising purposeful leadership.
