The factional chairman of PDP, Tanimu Turaki has been arraigned before a Federal Capital Territory high court in Maitama for allegedly providing false information to the police.

On Wednesday, Turaki, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was read the indictment and entered a not guilty plea.

The office of the inspector general of police is prosecuting the defendant for allegedly writing a petition on October 5, 2022, alleging Saidi Mainasara of having “intent to trigger police action” against him.

The prosecution said the alleged offence is punishable under section 140 of the Penal Code.

Usman Rabiu, the prosecution’s lawyer, objected to a bail request and requested that the court set a trial date after his plea.

Rabiu said that the defendant’s behaviour and past should be taken into account while determining whether to grant bail, and he urged the court to remand him.

In response, the defendant’s lawyer, Abdulaziz Ibrahim, requested bail, invoking the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and constitutional principles.

Additionally, Ibrahim informed the court that Turaki did not avoid customer service. He added that he was out of town when the procedures were given.

He further claimed that the defendant then willingly showed up in court and expressed regret for his earlier absence.

Consequently, the counsel dropped two previous motions that the defendant had made, which the court rejected without the prosecution objecting.

Following this, the presiding judgeKekemeke granted Turaki bail of N100 million with one surety of the same amount.

He also said the surety must be a lawyer with at least 40 years of practice or a SAN with at least 20 years post-call experience.

The case was adjourned to June 11 for commencement of trial.
