Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has assured the families of 10 police officers killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area that they will receive the state government’s support.
Idris gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Nigeria Police Force, led by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu-Nadada, at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
The officers were reportedly killed during an encounter with suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba LGA after police operatives intercepted the attackers who were moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.
According to the police, 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the operation, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed.
Two civilians were also killed in the encounter, while two police officers sustained injuries.
The governor commiserated with the Nigeria Police Force and the families of the deceased officers, noting that the personnel had been deployed to the area to support other security agencies in the fight against terrorism and other criminal activities.
Idris pledged that the state government would stand by the families of the fallen officers during the difficult period.
He said, “It is our tradition in Kebbi to assist the families of fallen officers who died in the line of duty. The Kebbi Government will come to the aid of the families of these officers who paid the supreme price.”
The governor also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting security agencies in their efforts to tackle criminal groups and restore peace in affected communities.
He stressed that the government would not allow any part of Kebbi State to be taken over by terrorists or other criminal elements.
Meanwhile, the police delegation conveyed the condolences of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to the governor, the people of Kebbi State and the families of the deceased officers.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police assured that security operatives would continue efforts to track down those responsible for the attack and ensure that they are brought to justice.
