Barcelona’s hopes of signing Spain’s Euro 2024 standout Nico Williams have been dashed as the 22-year-old winger has committed to staying at Athletic Bilbao, where he’s been handed an iconic jersey number. Williams, a key player in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, where fans were eager to see him reunite with his national teammate Lamine Yamal. However, Bilbao’s decision to give Williams a prestigious shirt number signals their determination to keep him at the club, leaving Barcelona supporters disappointed.

The news sparked reactions across social media, with some fans mocking Barcelona supporters for their dashed hopes. Despite the persistent transfer rumors, it seems Williams will remain at Bilbao, much to the delight of his current club’s fans and the disappointment of those in Barcelona who had been anticipating his arrival.

“Heathrow Slot Dispute: Nigerian Minister Appeals to UK”

“Heathrow Slot Dispute: Nigerian Minister Appeals to UK”.

Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has formally lodged a complaint with the UK government regarding Air Peace’s inability to secure a slot at Heathrow Airport.

In his letter dated August 1, 2024, to Louise Haigh, the UK Secretary of State for Transport, Keyamo expressed concerns over the refusal of British authorities to grant Nigeria’s flag carrier, Air Peace, access to Heathrow, which is the UK’s primary airport. Currently, Air Peace operates out of Gatwick Airport, a secondary location.

Keyamo has warned that if Air Peace’s request for a Heathrow slot is not met, Nigeria may reciprocate by restricting British Airways and Virgin Atlantic from accessing Lagos and Abuja airports. This move is seen as a strategic response to the perceived inequity in slot allocations.

The Minister emphasized that Air Peace’s unsuccessful attempts to secure a Heathrow slot highlight a broader issue. He noted that Nigeria’s airlines should have the opportunity to operate from tier-one airports abroad in accordance with the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA). He further stated that Nigeria might take countermeasures by directing British airlines to less prominent Nigerian airports, such as Ilorin or Kano, if the situation is not rectified.

Keyamo’s intervention comes after ongoing efforts by Air Peace to gain a slot at Heathrow, which would provide closer access to central London and potentially enhance the airline’s international operations. The complaint reflects a growing frustration with the current arrangement and a push for more equitable treatment for Nigerian carriers.

Cost Pressures Drive Nigeria’s Business Activity to 8-Month Low

Nigeria’s business activity drops to 8-months low on cost pressures

Cost Pressures Drive Nigeria’s Business Activity to 8-Month Low.

In July, Nigeria’s business activity experienced a significant downturn, falling to an eight-month low according to the latest Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report by Stanbic IBTC Bank. The headline PMI index slipped to 49.2, down from 50.1 in June and below the neutral 50.0 mark for the first time in eight months. This decline reflects ongoing economic challenges driven by rising costs and reduced demand.

Key Points:

  • Steep Price Pressures: The report highlights that input costs and selling prices continued to escalate rapidly, which has negatively impacted customer demand. This has led to decreased business activity and new orders across most sectors.
  • Sector Performance: Out of the four broad sectors covered, three saw a decline in activity in July. The only exception was manufacturing, which experienced an increase in production.
  • Inflation and Pricing: Selling prices have continued to rise sharply as businesses pass higher input costs onto consumers. Despite a general easing in the inflation rate to its slowest pace since May 2023, companies are still struggling with high purchase prices and staff costs.
  • Business Confidence: Confidence among businesses has reached a new record low, reflecting concerns over rising costs and the uncertain economic environment. Although some companies have reduced charges to attract customers, overall optimism remains subdued.
  • Future Outlook: Despite the current challenges, there are indications that businesses expect output to increase over the next 12 months. This is attributed to plans for expansion, including efforts to start exporting and opening new branches.
  • PMI Composition: The PMI index is a composite measure based on five key areas: new orders (30%), output (25%), employment (20%), suppliers’ delivery times (15%), and stock of items purchased (10%). The index is designed to offer a snapshot of the economic health of the private sector.

Additional Insights:

Muyiwa Oni, Head of Equity Research West Africa at Stanbic IBTC Bank, noted that inflation might have peaked in June and could moderate in the latter half of 2024. This potential easing is expected as the effects of recent economic changes, such as the removal of the PMS subsidy and currency depreciation, begin to fade.

The PMI report underscores the ongoing pressure on Nigerian businesses due to cost increases and highlights the broader economic challenges affecting the country’s private sector.

Barbican Capital Sues First Bank Over Shareholding Error

Barbican Capital sues First Bank for wrongly stating shareholding

Barbican Capital Sues First Bank Over Shareholding Error.

Barbican Capital Limited has initiated a lawsuit against FBN Holdings, Nigeria’s oldest financial institution, due to discrepancies in reported shareholding. Barbican, the largest single shareholder in FBN Holdings, alleges that the bank improperly reduced its reported shareholding from approximately 13.61% to 8.67% in its audited accounts, which has caused significant confusion and concern.

In its complaint, Barbican Capital points out that the bank’s December 2023 audited accounts inaccurately reported its shareholding at 3.1 billion shares, down from 4.8 billion shares as previously stated in the unaudited accounts. This reduction was accompanied by a note suggesting the new figure was based on verification by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Barbican Capital contends that the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS), a reliable source for confirming share ownership, verifies its shareholding as 5.39 billion shares (15.01%), not the reduced figure reported by FBN Holdings. The bank’s subsequent decision to freeze dividend payments to Barbican further intensified the dispute, prompting the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeks several declarations, including:

  1. Affirmation of Shareholding: Confirmation that Barbican Capital’s shareholding stands at 5,386,397,202 shares as per CSCS records.
  2. Protection of Rights: Protection against any alteration or misstatement of Barbican’s shareholding.
  3. Injunction: A court order restraining FBN Holdings from altering Barbican’s shareholding records.

Barbican Capital argues that its share ownership and rights have been validated through dividend payments and CSCS records, making the bank’s actions both perplexing and unjust. The case highlights issues of shareholder rights and financial reporting accuracy within Nigeria’s banking sector.

#EndBadGovernance Protest: Use of Out-of-School Children Poses Danger to Nigeria.

The #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria have highlighted major issues such as corruption, economic hardship, and social injustice. A disturbing trend is the involvement of out-of-school children in these protests, which has raised concerns about their safety and exploitation. Experts warn that using these vulnerable children in protests poses significant risks, including physical harm, emotional trauma, and legal violations. The protests also underscore Nigeria’s broader challenges, especially in the North, where poverty, insecurity, and lack of education fuel social unrest. If not addressed, these issues could escalate into a national crisis.

Yerima Shettima claims EndSARS protests were driven by internet fraudsters.

Yerima Shettima, leader of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, asserts that the North’s involvement in the recent protests is due to severe hunger and poverty, which he believes were caused by neglect from past northern leaders and worsened by the Buhari administration. He contrasts this with the EndSARS protests, which he claims were driven by “Yahoo Yahoo” (internet fraud) individuals, arguing that the current unrest in the North is fundamentally about survival

There’s nothing to show Tinubu is prepared to solve Nigeria’s problems – Atiku

Atiku: There’s no evidence Tinubu is ready to solve Nigeria’s problems

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that its lack of responsiveness to the struggles of Nigerians suggests it was unprepared for governance from the outset. Speaking through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku expressed disappointment that the government needed mass protests to realize the severity of the country’s challenges.

Atiku highlighted that the Tinubu administration, despite being elected to address existing issues, has exacerbated the problems inherited from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. He pointed out that under Buhari, the economy fell into recession twice, largely due to poor economic management, nepotism, and widespread corruption. However, Atiku argued that these issues have worsened under Tinubu, leading to deeper divisions and increased insecurity, which continues to prevent farmers from returning to their land.

He also criticized the handling of the Dangote Refinery, noting that despite the previous administration’s significant investment, the refinery has not yet met domestic demands or generated the anticipated foreign exchange through exports. Atiku questioned whether the current administration had entered into any agreements with foreign interests that could undermine this crucial investment.

Ultimately, Atiku expressed his concern that there is no indication that the Tinubu government is prepared to effectively address the nation’s pressing problems.

Alliance Hospital saves Nigeria over $1bn in medical tourism

Alliance Hospital saves Nigeria over $1bn in medical tourism

Alliance Hospital saves Nigeria over $1bn in medical tourism.

Dr. Christopher Otabor, the Managing Director of Alliance Hospital in Abuja, proudly shared that his hospital has saved Nigeria over $1 billion in medical tourism. This achievement reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality medical care, which has encouraged Nigerians who would typically seek healthcare abroad to stay home instead.

During an event organized by the Federal Capital Territory branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), where Dr. Otabor was honored with an Award of Excellence in Medical Entrepreneurship, he highlighted the hospital’s growth and success. He recounted that Alliance Hospital, which began as a clinic in 2011, expanded into a full-fledged hospital by 2014, driven by a vision to reduce the outflow of Nigerians seeking medical treatment overseas.

Dr. Otabor emphasized that the hospital’s advanced medical equipment and experienced staff have been key to its success. Notably, Alliance Hospital has performed over 100 kidney transplants, 156 spine surgeries, 72 knee replacements, and 60 hip replacements, among other complex procedures, all within Nigeria. These are treatments that would have previously required patients to travel abroad, thereby saving significant amounts of money and demonstrating the hospital’s capability.

He also noted that Alliance Hospital is now attracting not only Nigerians but also individuals from the U.S., U.K., India, and other countries, who come to Nigeria for their medical needs. This shift is a testament to the hospital’s world-class services at more affordable prices compared to international standards.

Dr. Otabor expressed his gratitude for the award from the NMA, particularly valuing the recognition from his professional peers. He sees the award as a validation of his efforts in medical entrepreneurship and as an encouragement to continue providing exceptional healthcare in Nigeria.

“Celine Dion Issues Warning to Trump for Using Her Song.

Celine Dion is pushing back against former President Donald Trump’s use of her iconic song “My Heart Will Go On” at a recent rally, stating that her team did not authorize its use and expressing confusion over the song selection.

Dion’s management released a statement revealing they were unaware of the song being played at a Montana rally and clarified that she does not endorse any political candidates. The statement also questioned Trump’s choice of the song, which has raised eyebrows for its unconventional use in a political setting.

Trump’s rallies are known for their eclectic music choices, and while Dion’s song was a surprising pick, it was part of a broader playlist that included tracks from “The Lion King.” Despite this, Dion’s team emphasized that her music should not be seen as an endorsement of any political figure or campaign.

On the other side, the Harris/Walz campaign is reportedly avoiding Hollywood associations at the Democratic National Convention, aiming to keep the event from being perceived as overly influenced by celebrity culture.

Adele confirms her engagement after a fan proposed to her.

Adele has seemingly confirmed her engagement to Rich Paul during her concert in Munich, Germany, after three years of dating. During the show, a fan jokingly proposed to her, prompting Adele to reveal that she’s already engaged by saying, “I can’t marry you, I’m already getting married,” while showing off a diamond ring on her left hand. The crowd cheered as she expressed her gratitude to the fan for the proposal.

Adele and Rich Paul, who have been together since 2021, have sparked engagement rumors before.
