N47bn Debt: AEDC Threatens To Disconnect Aso Rock, 85 Others.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has issued a 10-day notice to 86 government agencies, including the presidential villa, ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), urging them to settle a debt of over N47 billion owed as of December 2023. Failure to do so may result in disconnection from grid power.
Among the debtors listed are the Chief of Defence Staff Barracks and Military Formations owing over N12 billion, followed by the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory with a N7.5 billion debt, Ministry of Finance with over N5.4 billion debt, and Niger State Governor-Abuja Liaison Office with N3.4 billion.
Others include the Ministry of State for Petroleum, Presidential Villa, Ministry of Education, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, and Nigeria Police Force, among others.
The management of the company stated: “The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) is compelled to publish the details of government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) with long outstanding unpaid bills for electricity supply services, as previous attempts to prompt payment have been unsuccessful.
“The relevant MDAs are hereby given notice that AEDC will disconnect their services after 10 days from the date of this publication, i.e., after Wednesday, 28th February 2024, until they settle their debts.”
This situation reflects the ongoing challenges faced by electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in collecting revenue.

There could soon be a new fuel shortage in Nigeria as the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) announced its nationwide service withdrawal starting Monday, February 19.
This decision stems from the economic challenges brought about by high operational expenses and reduced freight rates. The association cited these high costs as the reason for its action in a letter dated February 15, addressed to the General Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), signed by its national President, Othman Yusuf.
The letter titled ‘Operation Withdrawal Notice’ was sent to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the State Security Services (SSS), and the executive secretary of the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (NEMAN).
NARTO serves as the central organization for all commercial vehicle owners in Nigeria involved in transporting petroleum products, general goods, and passengers within the country and the broader West Africa region.
NARTO’s decision to suspend operations could severely disrupt the distribution of petrol and diesel across Nigeria, potentially leading to a crisis in the sector.
The association recently expressed concern about the high cost of diesel needed to fuel its trucks for transporting petroleum products nationwide.
In their communication, NARTO stated their inability to sustain operations amidst the current economic conditions in the country.
“We are compelled to seek your union’s support and understanding regarding the significant challenges faced by petroleum truck owners due to high operational costs,” the association conveyed.
“Despite our efforts to negotiate fair freight rates with relevant authorities, particularly the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria, we have not received favorable responses. Therefore, the NARTO National Executive Council (NEC) has decided to instruct all members to cease petroleum truck loading activities effective Monday, February 19, 2024.”
Occurring within the Mokola region of Ibadan, the state capital, throngs of youths bearing placards voiced their grievances through chants. The placards displayed various messages including ‘Address food price surge and inflation’, ‘The impoverished suffer hunger’, ‘Tinubu, uphold your commitments’, and similar sentiments.
Police officers were observed at the protest site while demonstrators peacefully rallied against the economic challenges spurred by the removal of petrol subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange windows.
On Sunday, the police issued a warning stating that they would not tolerate any disturbances of peace during protests in the state. The demonstration in Oyo is part of a series of protests, including those in Kano and Minna, driven by economic challenges stemming from the removal of petrol subsidies, food inflation, and the high cost of living.
Go After Hoarders Of Food Items’
President Bola Tinubu issued directives to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, last Thursday. They were instructed to collaborate with governors in pursuing individuals hoarding food supplies.
During a meeting with governors from all 36 states in Abuja last week, the President also stated that he opposed the idea of importing food items and clarified that he had no plans to establish a price control board.
The President emphasized his stance during the meeting, stating, “I will not establish a price control board, nor will I authorize food importation.” He expressed concerns that importing food could lead to fraudulent practices and mismanagement, instead advocating for supporting farmers to increase local food production.
Furthermore, the President directed the release of grains to alleviate the escalating prices of food items. Despite these measures, numerous Nigerians remain discontented with the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
In a move to combat Nigeria’s soaring inflation, BUA Group Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu announced a staggering 50% salary increase for all staff, effective February 1st, 2024. This decision, communicated through an internal memo, aims to alleviate the economic hardship faced by employees amidst rising costs of living.
The memo, signed by BUA’s Head of Human Resources, Mohammed Wali, highlights the chairman’s intent to mitigate the impact of the current economic climate. The raise applies to both permanent and non-permanent staff, reflecting BUA’s commitment to supporting all its employees.
This announcement comes amidst Nigeria’s inflation reaching an all-time high of 29.90% in January 2024, marking 13 consecutive months of increase. Food and transportation costs, major expenses for Nigerians, significantly contribute to this inflation rate.
To counter these effects, companies like BUA are resorting to wage increases. Following fuel subsidy removal last year, several businesses, particularly banks, implemented similar measures to cushion the blow for their employees.
The federal government has also established a minimum wage review committee to address the cost-of-living crisis. While they began paying a supplementary N35,000 to federal workers after fuel subsidy removal, consistency has been an issue. Notably, the Nigerian Labour Congress recently proposed a N1 million minimum wage, citing the dire economic situation.
BUA’s bold initiative sets a precedent for other companies to address the economic hardship faced by their employees. This move not only demonstrates their commitment to employee well-being but also serves as a potential catalyst for broader change in wage structure across Nigeria.

Jürgen Klopp says he is ‘over the moon’ to welcome back Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Brentford this weekend.
The Egyptian forward is back in contention for Liverpool’s upcoming match at Gtech Community Stadium this Saturday.
He returned to the squad after a muscle injury sustained during international duty last month had sidelined him since January 1st.
Salah’s comeback comes at a crucial juncture for Liverpool, as they aim to stay atop the Premier League table, gear up for the Carabao Cup final, and pursue advancement in both the Emirates FA Cup and Europa League.
It’s no surprise that Klopp is thrilled to have his top scorer back.
“I’m really happy to have Mo back,” Klopp told reporters. “He’s been training well and looks sharp. Having him available is a huge boost for the team, both on and off the pitch.
“It’s not just about the goals he scores; it’s also about his personality and what he brings to the team. He’s eager to get back into action, and that’s great to see.
“Mo is incredibly professional, and he’s handled his recovery workload brilliantly. Let’s see what he can do on the pitch.

A video gone viral. A nation in mourning. The sudden passing of Herbert Wigwe, Access Bank’s CEO, has left a gaping hole in Nigeria’s financial landscape and a void in the hearts of countless people. But amidst the grief, a heartwarming video of his birthday celebration has emerged, offering a glimpse into the kind of man he was – a leader who inspired, a philanthropist who helped, and a human being who left an indelible mark.
The footage isn’t just balloons and cake. It’s the genuine joy on his employees’ faces, the infectious laughter, the sheer unadulterated love radiating from the room. It’s a stark contrast to the cold reality of the helicopter crash that took him, his wife, and son away.
Tribute from the masses
Wigwe wasn’t just a suit in a boardroom. He was “the helper to millions,” as many called him. Sujimoto81, a fellow entrepreneur, echoed this sentiment: “His fire, determination, and generosity captivated my admiration.” People saw in him not just a successful businessman, but a beacon of hope, a hand extended in times of need.
One social media comment, perhaps grasping at straws in the face of tragedy, noted: “The look in his eyes… like he felt like he was about to go home.” Whether a premonition or simply wishful thinking, it adds another layer to the bittersweetness.
His passing resonates deeply beyond the corporate world. Nigerians, ordinary people whose lives he touched, are pouring out their grief. The video, though tinged with sadness, serves as a testament to the impact he had. It’s not just about his achievements, but about the warmth he brought to the world.
Tears flow freely, yes. But amidst the sobs, there’s a smile, a memory, a reminder of the good he did. This birthday song turned eulogy paints a picture of a life well-lived, a legacy of kindness, and a man who will be remembered not just for his success, but for the love he shared. Perhaps that’s how he would have wanted it – not just remembered for his climb to the top, but for the hand he extended on the way up.
Inter Milan extended their lead in Serie A to 10 points on Friday, defeating Salernitana 4-0 ahead of their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.
Simone Inzaghi is on track to secure his first league title as a coach with a dominant Inter squad that easily dispatched Salernitana, who are currently at the bottom of the league.
Inter’s star strike duo Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez kicked off the scoring with two goals in just two minutes during the first half. Denzel Dumfries added a third goal shortly before halftime, while Marko Arnautovic sealed the victory with a late goal.
Once again, Inter displayed their strength, fielding a lineup close to Inzaghi’s preferred starting XI. They aim to surpass local rivals AC Milan in winning 20 league titles.
“It’s fantastic because the team is performing at a very high level… I’m really happy about that,” said Inter captain Martinez to DAZN.
Juventus could reduce the Gap!
Juventus could reduce the gap to seven points with one more game played if they win against struggling Verona on Saturday.
However, Inter has won all eight matches since the start of the year and appears superior to their rivals as they prepare for Atletico Madrid’s visit in the first leg of their last 16 tie on Tuesday.
“This team is definitely different from last year; we’ve had many changes, but we must continue to strive for improvement and focus on the next game,” Martinez added.
“Tuesday is crucial for us… so we need to maintain the same mindset, rest a bit, and approach the game with serious intensity.”
Salernitana faced a tough challenge in their first match under Inzaghi’s former Lazio teammate, Fabio Liverani, who took over from Filippo Inzaghi earlier this week.
Liverani faces a significant challenge as Salernitana are currently six points behind Sassuolo, who are just above the relegation zone. Sassuolo will face Champions League contenders Atalanta on Saturday night.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its members and affiliate unions to mobilize for a two-day nationwide protest on February 27 and 28 if the federal government doesn’t fulfill the agreements signed in October 2023.
The two-day nationwide protest, as outlined in the communique signed by NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Comrade Ismail Bello, is scheduled to occur following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum previously issued by the organization.
Comrade Ajaero of the NLC, addressing newsmen at the end of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, instructed his members to standby for an indefinite strike. This strike would commence seven days after the nationwide protest if the government still fails to meet its demands.
Ajaero emphasized that Labor seeks action, not mere government dialogue, urging immediate implementation of agreements to restore faith in democracy as Nigerians face survival challenges.
A communique read by the Congress President at the end of the meeting noted that on Monday, 29th May 2023, President Bola Tinubu announced during his inaugural speech the withdrawal of Subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Nigeria.
That singular pronouncement immediately caused the price of the product, central to transportation and power in Nigeria, to escalate nationwide. This threw the nation into turmoil and confusion, leaving citizens stranded and increasing suffering, hardship, and angst among the populace.
October 2 Agreement!
“We held a series of meetings with the federal government, ultimately resulting in the signing of an Agreement, now referred to as the October 2 Agreement.” This Agreement contained several safeguards which we had believed if implemented conscientiously would have gone a long way to ameliorate the suffering and hardship that the ill-conceived and ill-implemented policies of the government have foisted on the masses and workers.
“The NEC-in-session considered the unfortunate state of our nation; the huge suffering pervading the nation, the general crisis of living, the outrage expressed by the majority, and the increased attendant fears of the continued consequences of these Policies and the persistent refusal of the Government to implement the tenets of the October Agreement.
