The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has proposed merging the Ministries of Petroleum and Power into a single Ministry of Energy as a solution to Nigeria’s persistent power supply challenges.

The union also rejected the Federal Government’s proposed ₦6 trillion bailout for electricity generation and distribution companies.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated this over the weekend amid the ongoing crisis in the country’s power sector. He argued that public funds should not be used to support struggling private entities, particularly the GenCos and DisCos.
According to him, the proposed bailout would only provide a temporary fix rather than address the root causes of the sector’s problems. He added that the privatization of Nigeria’s power sector has failed to deliver expected results, proving it is not a sustainable solution.

“Therefore, we are proposing a radical structural intervention: the immediate merger of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum and the Federal Ministry of Power to create a single, unified Ministry of Energy.
“By merging the ministries, we take the first step toward de-commodifying energy.
“We move towards a system where the State, through a coordinated Ministry of Energy, can mobilize public finance for investment in generation, transmission, and distribution, just as it is done in nations that have lifted their citizens out of poverty,” he said.
