The governor of Abia, Alex Otti, claims he has initiated a plan to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), after the federal high court in Abuja found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison.

Recall that on November 20, Nnamdi Kanu was found guilty of terrorism-related charges and given a life sentence by Federal High Court Judge James Omotosho.

Otti said in a statement on Saturday that the strategy to guarantee Kanu’s release has been in place since the beginning of the trial.

The governor declared that he was “happy to inform” the public that he would keep working on the agreed-upon plan until the goal was accomplished.

The Abia state governor stated that he had previously visited Nnamdi Kanu in detention and conveyed to him progress on high-level engagements with “the highest authorities” in the country as part of an agreed political roadmap.

“While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated and will continue to work on the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” Otti stated.

“The poor management of the IPOB issue at the incubation stage created the problem we have today, hence we cannot allow it to linger and create a bigger monstrous situation for us.”

The governor of Abia cautioned lawmakers against taking advantage of Nnamdi Kanu’s current predicament, claiming that doing so could jeopardise ongoing initiatives.

“May I caution politicians who have positioned themselves to play petty and dirty politics with the travails of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to jettison the idea, and rather work with us to secure his freedom,” Otti said.

The governor asked people in Abia and the surrounding southeast to maintain their composure and refrain from making remarks that would endanger ongoing diplomatic negotiations.

Otti stated that he will keep collaborating with interested parties and worried Nigerians to seek a diplomatic and political solution with the federal government.

He said he had received indications from the federal government that a settlement was in reach and that Kanu will soon recover his freedom.

Meanwhile, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, claims that Kanu’s life sentence was not unexpected.

According to Abaribe, the conclusion was unavoidable because the federal government refused to provide amnesty to Kanu, in contrast to other groups.
