In the early hours of Sunday, tragedy hit South Korea as Jeju Air, a passenger plane that was carrying 181 people onboard, crashed and burst into flames in the South Korean city of Muan.
The plane was carrying 175 passengers and six cabin crew members. Reports suggest that the plane had malfunctioning landing gear and went off the runway before hitting a fence and bursting up in flames at the airport.
Additional reports state that the fire left over 28 people either dead or injured, while two people were evacuated to safety. Currently, rescue operations are ongoing, and the number of casualties might increase.
However, a fire department official who spoke to CNN said the airplane had been “almost completely destroyed” by fire.
Updated: The cause of the incident is being speculated to be a bird strike, which caused malfunctioning of the landing gear of the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800.
Further reports from the authorities say 179 passengers are presumed dead, with two flight attendants surviving the crash.
