Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church, had indeed been said to be in grave condition on Saturday after the hospitalization for a lung infection that lasted for an entire week.
In yet another report, the doctors warned the almost-89-year-old pontiff that should he remain at the Vatican, he would be risking death.
So it was that he had to be brought, in acute distress with chest pain, to the Gemelli hospital in Rome on February 21, having resisted calls to leave the Vatican for several days.
The 88-year-old pontiff is reported to be suffering from a “complex” respiratory infection involving asthmatic bronchitis that requires antibiotic treatment and cortisone. Reports mentioned that the Pope has confided to close aides that he “might not make it this time.”
To ensure the continuity of his vision, the pontiff appointed Sister Raffaella Petrini as the first female governor of Vatican City.
Anupdate given through an official statement from Vatican City says that “The Holy Father, however, is not out of danger”, and his condition continues to worsen. The first time “critical” was used in an official communication concerning Francis’s health since he was admitted on February 14.
It bears mentioning that Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, is the leader of the Catholic Church and ruler of Vatican City.
He is also the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and the first non-European pope since the 8th century.
