On Saturday morning, a tragic incident occurred in Benin City as a storey building collapsed on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, an area popular among University of Benin (UNIBEN) students. Heavy rainfall had preceded the collapse.
Rescue teams are currently working tirelessly to extricate trapped individuals from the rubble. The building, located in a predominantly student-populated area, collapsed during a downpour, trapping several students inside.
One student, who requested anonymity, reported that the university rescue team had successfully rescued some trapped occupants, but several others sustained injuries. The injured were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
However, one victim remains trapped inside the building, according to the student. Despite efforts to locate and rescue the individual, who has been communicating from within the rubble, they have yet to be freed.
The Dean of Students from UNIBEN is on the scene, overseeing the rescue operations alongside the university’s team. The university management has not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of individuals affected.
