The founder of Mammy Market, Maria Ochefu, passes away at 86.
Maria Ochefu, the visionary behind the renowned Mammy Markets in Military barracks across Nigeria, passed away at 86.
Her son, Professor Yakubu Ochefu, confirmed that she peacefully passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, March 18.
She had been receiving care at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, and was set to celebrate her 87th birthday in April.
Security analyst Deji Adesogan shared the news of her passing on X expressing condolences with the message,
“RIP MAMA MAMMY MARKET.
“The founder of Mammy Market in military barracks across the country, Maria Ochefu, 86 years old, is dead.
“She was married to Colonel Anthony Ochefu, who was once a military governor in Enugu State.”
Maria Ochefu, who was married to Colonel Anthony Ochefu, a former military governor of Enugu State, pioneered the Markets, which became a vital part of military life by providing Soldiers and their families with essential goods, food and social gathering spaces.
