    Panic as fire guts Oyo market, causes devastating loss
    At least 12 stores have been destroyed as flames gutted a popular market in Ibadan, Oyo state on Thursday night, April 10.

    On Friday, April 11, witnesses reported that the flames went off at approximately 10:55 p.m. at Block A, No 64, Mayegun Cement Store Market, Araromi, Agodi-Gate in Ibadan and burned for over three hours before being put out. According to sources, the flames destroyed items valued over several million naira.

    Investigations also showed that an electrical surge close to flammable objects caused the catastrophe. Yemi Akinyinka, the general manager of the state fire service in Ibadan, confirmed the occurrence, stating that the agency received the distress call at precisely 11:02 p.m.

    Yinka stated “The agency’s control room received the distressed call at exactly 23:02 hours on Thursday, April 10, 2025, through telephoning and Mr. Young to report a shop fire at the above address.

    “The fire personnel, led by Cfs Jimoh, promptly deployed to the scene of the fire incident. On arrival, we met some lockup shops well alight, and we swiftly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to other nearby shops. “The fire affected 12 out of multiple numbers of shops and we were able to save property worth billions of naira in the market. The appliance returned to the station by 03:18hrs and on standby.”

    Meanwhile, reports have also revealed that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company restored power after an early morning flame destroyed the only market in Trademore Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, which began at around 3.30 am and was put out by the Federal  Service two hours later.
