Peter Obi, chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has warned Nigerians to remain vigilant or risk losing their freedoms. He made the statement in a post on his verified X account on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of protecting democratic principles beyond just elections.
Obi stated in a Tuesday post on his verified X handle that democracy is about respecting rights, preserving institutions, and safeguarding opposition in addition to elections.

The former governor of Anambra State was reacting to a tweet made by Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central.
Peter Obi stressed that voting is only one aspect of democracy. It entails defending institutions, preserving dissent, and honouring the rights of citizens. He cautioned that the credibility of the entire system is in jeopardy if these pillars fall.

“When governments kill protesters, intimidate judges, punish free speech, and flout court orders, democracy isn’t evolving—it’s unraveling. First-world and third-world democracies are starting to look the same: authoritarian in practice, regardless of the label.

“Democracy is more than elections; it’s about protecting dissent, upholding institutions, and respecting rights. When these pillars collapse, the system itself loses legitimacy. Citizens must stay vigilant or risk watching their freedoms vanish before their eyes,” Peter Obi wrote.
