A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has stated that Nigeria currently needs a leader who can create and manage wealth effectively.
Peter Obi made the remark while reacting to comments previously made by former presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, during a 2023 event at Chatham House in London, where Kwankwaso said he was more qualified to become Nigeria’s president because he holds a PhD.
At the time, Kwankwaso was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). He is now a member of the NDC alongside Obi.

Speaking during an interview on News Central’s “60 Minutes with Kay” on Thursday, Peter Obi acknowledged Kwankwaso’s academic and political experience but maintained that Nigeria’s current challenges require practical economic leadership.
According to him, “Qualification depends on perspective and where one is coming from. Kwankwaso said he was more qualified because he has a PhD, and there is nothing wrong with that. I do not have a PhD.
“He has experience and exposure. He served as a minister, so there is no doubt about his credentials. I don’t think what he said was wrong.
“But Nigeria today needs someone who can create wealth and manage it properly. I have built successful businesses from the ground up both in Nigeria and internationally.
“No one today, including the president, can say they have gone through the experiences I have had,” Peter Obi stated.
