The Labour Party has declared that it would not accept any invitation to form any alliances or coalitions ahead of the general elections in 2027. This was a component of a 12-point resolution that was approved during the party’s National Executive Council meeting, which took place in Abuja on Friday.
In the communiqué, Mr. Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, stated that the party will not be involved in any coalition agreement for 2027.

He voiced doubts about the current coalition negotiations, claiming that those leading them had the ability and moral fibre to form strong partnerships.
Abure said, “The Labour Party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 general election.
“Instead, we will focus on rebuilding, repositioning, re-strategising, reconciling, and expanding our membership base to win the 2027 elections,”
“People who cannot unite their own parties cannot lead a national coalition” he said.
According to him, the NEC also looked into what it called anti-party actions taken by Abia Governor Alex Otti and other members.
He claimed that as a result, a disciplinary committee was formed to look into the matter and provide recommendations in a fortnight.
Abure stated that the decision was made in response to Otti’s alleged derogatory comments about Labour Party made in public on national television.
The members of the disciplinary committee are Mr. Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Mr. Callistus Ihejiagwa; the chairman is Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, and the secretary is Alhaji Umar Farouk.
Abure further affirmed that Chief George Moghalu had won the party’s primary for the Anambra 2025 governorship after the April 5 Awka primaries.

Abure addressed worries regarding Moghalu’s recent defection from the All Progressives Congress by stating that the Labour Party was now selecting and screening candidates using more methodical and scientific methods.
Meanwhile, Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, has declared that he does not have to join the ruling All Progressives Congress because he is close to President Bola Tinubu.
According to Governor Otti, not everyone has to join the ruling party, the governor said in response to rumours that he intended to defect from the Labour Party to the APC.

“This is democracy, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held on to his Alliance for Democracy, Action Congress, and Action Congress of Nigeria before becoming APC. If he had defected, he wouldn’t be president today. Sometimes, you also have to stand for something.”
Regarding the LP’s leadership issue, Otti said he was unsure about his future in the party, adding that Abure was no longer the labour party chairman as his tenure had expired.
He said, “I am not God. I cannot say if there’ll still be an LP tomorrow.”
