Starting next Monday, NiMET is anticipated to face a strike by its workers owing to unresolved arrears.
Aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations and Technical and Recreational Employees, have directed staff members of the Nigeria Meteorology Agency (NiMET) to commence a strike action on Monday, May 20, 2024. This decision stems from management’s failure to address 45 months of minimum wage arrears and consequential adjustments for the staff.
In a letter dated May 14, 2024, signed by the three General Secretaries of the unions, they expressed disappointment at the agency’s failure to pay the arrears despite an earlier ultimatum. While management proposed paying the arrears in installments, the unions found this unacceptable. They also highlighted the delay in disbursing palliative payments sanctioned by the Federal Government since October 2023, as well as the non-implementation of a 25-35% salary increase and the exclusion of NiMET staff from receiving Peculiar Allowances.
The unions emphasized the staff’s dire financial situation and criticized management for neglecting their demands, including the review of outdated conditions of service. Consequently, they issued a notice of strike action, effective May 20, 2024, demanding the full payment of the outstanding arrears, adaptation of NiMET’s salary structure to the approved Federal Government standard, and the commencement of the review of outdated conditions of service in collaboration with the unions.
